Gastric Plication: Diet

Diet after Gastric plication surgery

Gastric plication is done by burying the greater curvature of stomach in multiple vertical rows. The resultant stomach is converted into a narrow tube of about 100 ml capacity. This radical change in the structure of stomach affects the churning and mixing of food. It may also result in malabsorption of certain nutrients. Considering these changes in physiology, a change in the dietary habits is required to prevent any negative effects on the body while trying to lose weight.

Diet after surgery

Dietary guidelines after gastric plication surgery should involve both the quality and quantity of food and water. A special attention to volume, consistency, frequency and caloric content of food is required. It should also cater for the fluid requirements of body.  The vitamins and micronutrients are also an essential component. A trial of post-surgery diet given to the patient before surgery can give the patient a realistic picture of diet after surgery.

Quantity of food

  • The volume of each meal is reduced but the frequency increases.
  • The food should be nicely pureed and/or chewed. This can be ensured by taking a longer time to chew the food before it is swallowed. Each time, a small amount of food is taken and chewed rather than taking a large mouthful and gulping it quickly. It is preferable to consume soft and easily chewable food.
  • One has to relearn to eat food. The previous speed of eating should be forgotten. A smaller spoon should be used to take in smaller bites of food. The average duration of the small meals should be 15 to 20 minutes.
  • It is preferable to consume a high protein diet. The protein requirement is 1 gram per kilogram of body weight. An average adult should consume about 50 to 60 grams of proteins daily.
  •  The fluid consumption is essential for the body metabolism. Since the capacity of stomach is reduced, it is recommended that the fluids should not be taken along with the food. So one can have water, one hour before or after a meal.

Quality of food

One is prone to nutritional deficiency after any bariatric surgery. After gastric plication surgery, a patient may develop iron and vitamin B 12 deficiency because the stomach is involved with the metabolism of these nutrients. A vitamin and mineral supplement, hence becomes essential. A regular intake of calcium, B group of vitamins and folic acid is recommended.

A regular monitoring of diet is required to prevent malnutrition, while at the same time achieving reduced calorie consumption for weight reduction. It’s a lifelong effort and due care should be taken for successful results.
